Frequently Asked Questions about Implant Post-Care

While dental implants are one of the best teeth replacement options available, many patients don’t understand the post-treatment healing process and have many questions about post-care. Dr. Azita Adelynia gives patients peace of mind by answering frequently asked questions regarding dental implant aftercare.

What Should I Expect During My Recovery?

Before restorations are placed, dental implant posts need enough time to fuse with the jawbone as the surgical site heals; this process typically lasts between three to six months. Recovery periods vary, depending on the number and location of implants, as well as overall dental health and bone density. While patients are recuperating, it is not uncommon for the area to be swollen. Placing an ice pack for the initial 36 hours after treatment reduces inflammation and alleviates discomfort.

If you need more pain relief, you can take over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen. You should contact your dental practice for additional information to relieve your discomfort.

Bleeding for the first 24 hours is also common after the procedure. If this occurs, gently bite down on gauze until it subsides. But if bleeding does not lessen after the first 15 to 20 minutes of pressure, contact your dentist so they can provide you with further instructions.

How Do I Help Ensure the Healing Process Goes Smoothly?

Having an effective at-home dental care routine helps ensure sure the surgical site remains clean. Maintaining oral hygiene helps lessen discomfort while promoting healing. Gently brush and floss before finishing with a warm saltwater rinse.

What Should I Avoid After the Implant Procedure?

For the first 24 hours, do not rinse, spit, or touch the surgical site, as this may irritate the treatment area and cause future complications. Do not perform any strenuous activities and limit your movement for the first three days after the procedure. Exercising or heavy lifting can extend the healing period, as it may reopen the wound. You should also limit jaw movement and only drink cold liquids for the first three days after implant treatment.
